The lake was formed by a landslide that blocked the valley, creating a natural dam that filled with water over thousands of years. Today, this geological history is invisible, replaced by a scene of serene beauty. The surrounding mountains, covered in dense forests of pine, fir, beech, and oak, create a natural amphitheater that changes character with each season.

The lake is fed with several spring waters, two to three partly continuous streams and especially snow and rain waters. This continuous replenishment keeps the water fresh and clean, supporting a healthy ecosystem of fish and aquatic plants. The lake depth varies throughout the year, reaching its maximum in spring when snowmelt swells its waters.
